(don't abandon it, you get a faction wide public order penalty) Once you're back in fighting shape, demolish everything and let it rebel, move on and don't look back. When you need to replenish, loot and occupy a settlement, your replenishment rate for navies is unusable, so consolidate your units and recruit new ones to fill out the gaps (their recruit and upkeep cost are almost identical, no brainer). Send them down towards the Mediterranean and sack everything you can on the way.

Once you get the money put together a fleet of 2 onager ships, 4 bows and as many base melee ships as you can, they'll upgrade with your spears.

In the mid-late game you also get Norse Berserker Marauders which give you lots of hacking power which is important in winning naval landings against defended cities, and you get Saxon Royal Marines that are very tanky and cost effective. Nordic heavy raiders (your first upgrade on your standard unit) are very sturdy and can handle roman garrisons easy.

Yeah if they have spear wall at the beginning then yeah that definitely improves their usefulness, helps a lot against those pesky arrows too!ДЄlso forgot to mention your navy, don't discount it. Here's my main army comp in my current campaign as the Danes 20 turns in, as you can see it's nothing that's gonna rev your engine but it gets the job done. The other big tip for playing nords early game is use mercs for higher tier infantry or subjugate a germanic faction and hope you can levy some germanic warband. You'll have a much easier time fighting Celts in britain or the other Norse tribes (Danes, Jutes, Angles, Geats) than you will going up against romans or the cav happy franks at least until you get some decent axemen and the money to afford their upkeeep, or you can go up the culture line and unlock hearthguard which are solid hold the line infantry. Your cheap ass skirmishers are also great for doing cheap AP damage against the romans en masse. Make your anvil from nordic spears/nordic pikes and upgrade them ASAP, and use your mounted warband to deal with skirmish and act as your hammer. Your biggest strength as the saxons compared to the other nordic factions is that you have some decent early game cav. However once you hit your tier 3 melee upgrade they become beasts, at the cost of 3x upkeep. Nordic band and brigade are nearly worthless, their only redeeming value is their price and upkeep, use them to fill out armies for public order, and use them as disposable skirmishers and charge bait. I've never been a fan of saxon spears, but its been a while since I played as them, you get better melee defence and attack at the cost of armor, in the abscence of usable melee infantry they have a place, but. In the early game your go to infantry is actually your nordic spears, they have decent melee stats and can do decently against swords. The nordic factions are kind of designed to be late bloomers. Saxons have the Nordic base roster and yeah it's utter garbage in the early game, but it gets better. Think we missed one? Give us a Modmail and suggest new Subreddits to add to the lists!
